What is Valley Fever?
Valley Fever is a very common disease in the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico. It is caused by a fungus called Coccidiodes immitis and the medical name is Coccidioidomycosis. This fungus grows in areas of low rainfall and hot summer temperatures and becomes airborne when the soil is disturbed by high winds, construction, and other activities. Valley Fever is not contagious.

How Do Dogs Contract Valley Fever?
Dogs are very susceptible to Valley Fever and will most likely contract it by digging and sniffing around in the soil. Many dogs become infected with Valley Fever but will never show symptoms. Some dogs may get very sick from the fungus but the good news is that most dogs with recover with adequate antifungal medications.

What Are Some Symptoms of Valley Fever in Dogs?
If the primary disease is in the lungs, early symptoms could be coughing, a fever, and a lack of appetite. If the disease has progressed and spread to the bones, joints, or the brain, then the symptoms could be lethargy, lack of appetite, weight loss, re-occurring fever, lameness, and seizures. If any of the symptoms are apparent in your dog, you may want to have them tested by a veterinarian. If your animal tests positive, the most common treatment is an antifungal medication.
