Can Dogs Have Bacon or Bacon Grease?

Ask PHP Pete!

Dear PHP Pete,

The marketing industry is promoting “bacon flavor” for so many products. Can I safely feed my dog bacon or bacon grease?

-Yummy

Dear Yummy,

Calling all small breeds and large breeds: NO bacon or bacon grease for you!

I know how hard it is to look into the eyes of your best friend and tell him “no” but take into consideration the below information and then decide what’s best for your canine.

While speaking with Dr. Greg Brown, veterinarian and owner of Riverside Animal Hospital in Flushing, Michigan, he stated that he has seen so many cases of pancreatitis this year and he contributes the cause to pet owners feeding their pets bacon and bacon grease on a regular basis.

When pets constantly eat rich and fatty foods it can cause inflammation of the pancreas gland. The pancreas is responsible for releasing digestive enzymes in the stomach so that the body can properly absorb and digest the food that is taken in. When this gland becomes inflamed, it ceases to function efficiently.

Small breeds are more prone to this disease, but large breeds can be affected, too. To be a responsible pet owner, stick to healthier alternatives that include high-quality low-fat food and treats.

Other harmful foods for your pet include:

  • Chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Avocados
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Candy
